D. E. (Deene) Johnson is yet another of the remarkable contributors to Live Steam, The Home Shop Machinist, and Projects in Metal magazines. As early as 1984, Deene was offering us excellent articles, crisply written, beautifully photographed and accurately drawn. He is the sort of author editors can't get enough of. His work is always left on the money, thus making it a breeze to edit and get into print.

If you have been a subscriber to HSM, you remember vividly the heat both Deene and I took because we published plans for building a lawn edger! Some very righteous people wrote in or telephoned their indignation about our wasting their valuable magazine space with something as exotic and enigmatic as a lawn edger. Soon after we published some of those letters in "Readers' Forum," dozens of other readers came to his (and my) defense, saying, "If those guys read the articles closely, they saw some ingenious methods for meeting special machining challenges." I thought it was terrific! Certainly, not every reader wished to build a lawn edger, but I assumed every reader did wish to discover new approaches to machining, and that article (among many others he wrote) certainly fulfilled those wishes.

Deene has applied his machining skills to the live steam hobby, and readers of Live Steam magazine were most appreciative. Few authors have had the courage to send plans for a boiler to that magazine - fearing perhaps that their model would not measure up or work properly. Our Mr. Johnson did not hesitate, and many readers wound up building his boiler, following his directions for roll forming the boiler heads and fabricating a hand pump.

One series Deene wrote in HSM turned out to be the absolute favorite of literally hundreds of readers - the now famous "Mill-Drill Adventures." In it, he turns a basic Taiwanese imported mill-drill machine into a masterpiece of machining precision and efficiency. The series extended into ten chapters - each more intriguing than the previous. We couldn't get enough. At the various hobby expos I attended, people kept coming forward to ask when he was going to write another chapter.
