Digital Fortress by Dan Brown: Audiobook:

The first terrific code-breaking thriller by the author of The Da Vinci Code, the first of his backlist titles to be published in audio in the UK. The audio edition of The Da Vinci Code was a runaway success and Digital Fortress looks to be another in the same vein. When the NSA's invincible code-breaking machine encounters a mysterious code it cannot break, the agency calls its head cryptographer, Susan Fletcher, a brilliant, beautiful mathematician. What she uncovers send shock waves through the corridors of power. The NSA is being held hostage - not by guns or bombs - but by a code so complex that if released would cripple U.S. intelligence. Caught in an accelerating tempest of secrecy and lies, Fletcher battles to save the agency she believes in. Betrayed on all sides, she finds herself fighting not only for her country but for her life, and in the end, for the life of the man she loves.

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown: Audiobook:

Dan Brown's Angels and Demons is a fast-paced detective drama that involves science, art, the Catholic Church, and murder. Harvard symbology professor Robert Langdon is the protagonist who finds himself at a Swiss nuclear research facility. It seems a scientist, who specialized in explosive antimatter, has been murdered and the historically infamous society, the Illuminati, is involved. The antimatter has been taken, and Langdon joins the scientist's daughter, Vittoria, on a mad dash through some of Rome's most famous landmarks, in an effort to find it before the Vatican is leveled.

The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown: Audiobook:

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. Solving the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci clues visible for all to see and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. Terry Pratchett - Mort

Password:http://www.~censored~

Death rides on a pale horse -- named Binky.

That's just one of the many details about Death which readers will learn in Mort, the fourth book in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. The skeletal, black-shrouded character who speaks only in capital

letters and who, in previous novels, made only occasional cameo appearances, has finally gotten his own feature book.

In Mort, Death takes an apprentice named Mort, a stout-hearted lad who doesn't have the concentration needed to work on his father's reannual grape farm and who has been passed over by even the town beggar as a likely successor. But Death comes along and gives him a position nonetheless, and the responsibilities of the job -- to say nothing of the stylish all-black fashion statement -- help Mort become a new man.

Terry Pratchett - Equal Rites

Password:http://www.~censored~

Equal Rites is the third book in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

The last thing the wizard Drum Billet did before Death laid a bony hand on his shoulder, was to pass on his staff of power to the eighth son of an eighth son. Unfortunately for his colleagues in the chauvinistic (not to say misogynistic) world of magic, he failed to check on the new-born baby's sex...

Terry Pratchett - The Light Fantastic

discworld book2

Pass:http://www.~censored~

Terry Pratchett's second excursion into the Discworld, The Light Fantastic, picks up exactly where The Colour of Magic left off. (Somehow Tethis, the water-troll, has vanished from the space-faring Potent Voyager, but that isn't important now.) Twoflower the tourist is exploring space and Rincewind the wizard is plummeting through the void after him, albeit without the benefit of a spaceship. But great things are afoot and the Great Spell locked in Rincewind's brain -- the only spell the would-be wizard

has, because all of the others are too scared of it to stay in his mind for long -- is needed. So there's a great reality shift and Rincewind is brought back to the Discworld. Twoflower is, too, for reasons never made exactly clear. And, as a side effect of the magical revisionism needed to bring those two characters back to the world, the head librarian of the Unseen University is morphed into an orangutan.

This novel gives readers a much clearer look into the Unseen University, home and school for wizards. Let's just say that this isn't the sort of place where a Merlin or Gandalf would fit in comfortably. And it is these wizards who, realizing that they need Rincewind and his spell but not knowing exactly why, set forth in small, primarily inept search parties and attack squads to find the rogue almost-wizard. It is also there at the university that we meet Trymon, who is working to replace the eccentricities of the place with his own brand of bureaucracy.

Neil Gaiman - Coraline [UNABRIDGED] (Audiobook 3 CDs)

This is a somewhat spooky story about a girl named Coraline (not Caroline as the crazy old man says). It is like a modern version of Alice in WonderLand but without the silliness. It may frighten or confuse children under eight and I recommend it for people of all ages above that. This story is mainly about how Coraline tries to escape the wicked other mother, free her parents from the other mothers cluches, and free the souls of the children who live in the mirror. She will encounter the other mother, a talking cat who helps her on her journey, and the rats who help the other mother and give Coraline spooky messages. If you like books that are a little bit spooky, sort of weird, but a lot of fun to read, then this is the perfect book for you.

Neil Gaiman is a master storyteller. His diction is perfect. He does not waste words, but is not miserly with them either. His descriptions never fail to rouse a knowing nod and smile from the reader. Even when writing a quick throwaway piece in his journal...his style is impeccable.

For this novel, Neil sets his eyes on another audience: young adults. He gives children (or, as he has said, 'strange little girls of all ages and genders' - a nod to his friend Tori Amos and her 2001 "Strange Little Girls" album) a deliciously creepy novel about a girl, a new flat, and her other mother.

Coraline (not Caroline, even though all of the adults who live in the other flats keep on saying it that way and ignoring her corrections) and her parents move into a new home. One day, she pesters her father one too many times, so he sends her off on an expedition: find the water heater, count everything blue, count all the doors and windows. She does so, and is shocked to find that there are 13 doors that open and one that doesn't. She asks her mother what is behind the 14th door, and is told that it was bricked over when the house was broken up into flats. Her mother unlocks the door to show her this, but doesn't lock it again.

Later, Coraline creeps back, and finds that the door opens into another flat. It is just like her own, but not quite. In her room (green and pink, not boring like her own), she finds the sorts of clothing that she thinks she would have if she could pick out her own wardrobe -- not a grey school skirt, but costumes. In the kitchen, she finds her other parents -- not her real parents who work and don't play with her, but other parents who cook real food (not something from a "recipe" involving tarragon and butter beans) and dote upon her. Coraline knows that this is not left, and returns to her own flat.

Thus begins Coraline's adventure. The other mother steals Coraline's parents. Coraline returns to the other flat to get them back. Along the way, she makes friends with the most sarcastic of cats and finds the ghosts of other children who were stolen away by the other mother.

Gaiman's mastery of timing has never been shown so well than in this novel. Just when things are getting really scary, he breaks in with a droll and dry line that makes the reader laugh. This is a novel that is just begging to be read aloud -- as Neil Gaiman himself did on 02 July 2002 in Berkeley, California. His audience, around 500 people, hung on his every word. The adults in the audience were just as delighted as the children to have someone read such a delicious story to them.

Anne McCaffrey - AUDIO BOOKS - all links post here

DRAGONQUEST by Anne McCaffrey audio book, read by Dick Hill

This book is a continuation of the story begun in Dragonflight (I request you read Dragonflight before Dragonquest to save yourself endless trouble). Lessa, F'lar, F'nor, and the others have returned to continue in their endless quest to guard Pern from the deadly Thread. This time, new, interesting characters are introduced, and many surprising events occur. Dragonquest also brings the return of the legendary firelizards, 'miniature dragons' that the dragons of Pern were supposedly evolved from. The firelizards lead our Pernese friends on even more adventures that are thrilling, romantic, and suspenseful.

"Dragonflight" was a grand adventure which introduced readers to one of sci-fi's strongest heroines, the indomitable Weyrwoman Lessa. "Dragonquest" continues the story 7 years after Lessa made her spectacular flight...and all is not well on Pern. "Dragonquest" is more a series of inter-related episodes than "Dragonflight," but in this format the novel introduces new characters such as Jaxom and the Oldtimers, and really gives room for characters like F'lar, F'nor, Robinton, Kylara, and others, to become more fully-realized characters. Very exciting (is it just me or does F'lar get into a duel to the death in EVERY book?--not that I'm complaining!), insightful, and the world of Pern and it's inhabitants (yea! for the fire-lizards...gosh, are they cute!) becomes even more real than in the previous book. REALLY good stuff here.

THE DOLPHINS OF PERN by Anne McCaffrey audio book, read by Mark Rolston

In this latest addition to McCaffrey's popular Pern series (Chronicles of Pern: First Fall, etc.), the humans of Pern are reunited, after eons of noncontact, with the intelligent dolphins who had originally settled the planet with them. When a boy, Readis, is rescued by "shipfish" and realizes that they can talk, he develops a lifelong obsession with the fascinating creatures. But, though his interest is shared by the young dragonrider T'Lion and his dragon, Gadareth, it is forbidden by his mother, who has feared the unusual ever since she was kidnapped by outlaws because of her ability to hear and talk with dragons. Readis pursues his briney friendships nonetheless, reporting his findings to the computer, Aivas, which is attempting to guide the humans to a new era by freeing Pern forever from the devastating, life-consuming Thread. Meanwhile, the leading dragonriders and holdlords must act to contain the lust for land and power of Toric, Lord Holder of the South. Expanding upon events related in All the Weyrs of Pern, McCaffrey here adds yet another dimension to her colorful and vivid saga by focusing on the attractive dolphins and their highly believable society.

As the inhabitants of Pern finally near their longtime goal of ridding their world of the hazard of Thread, they regain contact with the shipfish, the dolphins that accompanied the earliest human settlers on the planet. T'lion, a young dragonrider, and Readis, a boy from a fishing village, are instrumental in rebuilding the ancient partnership between humans and dolphins in preparation for the spread of humanity over the remaining wildernesses of Pern. McCaffrey's latest installment in the Pern epic completely upholds the high standards of the series.

Fans of McCaffrey's (The Chronicles of Pern, 1993, etc.) famous dragons will no doubt be surprised by this latest installment in the Pern saga, which, for a change, spotlights the planet's dolphins. Although genetically engineered dolphins were part of the original Pern colony, humans lost contact--and interest--in the friendly cetaceans over the years, as they desperately developed the fire-breathing dragons to combat the deadly thread. But when a pod of dolphins rescues young Readis and his Uncle Alemi from a storm, the pair is stunned into silence by the appearance of the legendary talking ``ship fish.'' While few back at the holding believe the pair, Aivas (an ancient computer) encourages the contact. The dolphin's gentle (and too often cutesy) nature eventually wins over the other humans, including young T'lion, a dragonrider. While the residents of Pern launch a bold plan to rid their planet of threadfall forever, T'lion and Readis realize that it is their destiny to work with the dolphins, like the dragonriders who worked with the winged flyers before them. McCaffrey's solid characterizations and lush descriptions counterbalance the feathery plot, making this latest trip to Pern a pleasant, sentimental respite among old and familiar friends.

A GIFT OF DRAGONS by Anne McCaffrey audio book, read by Lee Meriwether. Unabridged

Bestseller Anne McCaffrey (The Skies of Pern) collects four tales of Pern in A Gift of Dragons, including a new adventure written especially for this volume, "Ever the Twain." Tom Kidd's illustrations of cuddly dragons and their human companions add extra value.

McCaffrey's legions of fans will warmly welcome this delightful, handsomely illustrated collection of four stories set on the planet Pern. "The Smallest Dragonboy," a heartwarming tale first published in 1973 in Science Fiction Tales, leads off. It centers on young Keevan, who is desperate to impress a dragon during his first time in the Hatching Ground because then no one in the Weyr will taunt him again for being small. In "The Girl Who Heard Dragons," the only Pern story in a 1994 collection to which it gave its title, Keeven, now K'van, and his dragon, Heth, answer Aramina's call for help in eluding the holdless Thella and her band of renegades, who want to use Aramina's ability to communicate telepathically with dragons. The story is a follow-up to The Renegades of Pern (1989). "Runner of Pern," which debuted in the short-novel anthology Legends (1998), discloses another facet of life on Pern in the romantic story of Tenna, one of the express runners who crisscross the land carrying messages from one settlement to another. With "Ever the Twain," first published here, McCaffrey returns to the Hatching Ground to follow the adventures of the twins Nevu and Nian on their way to impressing dragons.

A dragon-hatching at Ista Weyr provides twin brother and sister Neru and Nian with their first crisis of love and duty in "Ever the Twain," original to this illustrated collection of four Pern stories by McCaffrey. Also included are "The Smallest Dragonboy," about a young boy's fervent desire to bond with a baby dragon; the author's classic "The Girl Who Heard Dragons," the story of a girl with an unusual talent; and "Runner of Pern," a tale involving one of Pern's most important and least glamorous occupations. Tom Kidd's moody, atmospheric illustrations give a visual focus to these tales and help create a work of the imagination that belongs in most libraries.

Geoffery Archer - Honour Among Thieves

Newly minted CIA and Mossad agents work to undo damage wrought by a Mafia/Iraqi conspiracy in English author Archer's ( As the Crow Flies ; Kane and Abel ) witty, action-filled--if improbable--thriller. Some readers, we suppose, might find quite plausible the idea that the mob has arranged for a ringer to impersonate President Clinton during his first months in office. But here the actor who plays Clinton assumes the role only long enough to swipe the Declaration of Independence. The chase is on as mobsters spirit the manuscript-turned-macguffin off to Iraq, where Saddam has plans to barbeque it for the Fourth of July, live on CNN. Meanwhile, Yale Law professor Scott Bradley goes undercover for the CIA, tracking lovely young Mossad operative Hannah Kopec, likewise on assignment in Paris. It's only a matter of time before the two agents are caught up in each other's arms and, of course, in the race to recapture the Declaration.

THE TIBETAN BOOK OF THE DEAD

FOR READING ALOUD

adapted by Jean-Claude van Itallie

Read by Richard Gere

The ancient Tibetan text adapted by Jean-Claude van Itallie. Photos from La Mama performance by Gerry Vezzuso. Tibetan art illustrations selected by Professor Deborah Klimburg-Salter. Introduction by Judith Lief, former Dean of Naropa Institute. Published by North Atlantic Books, Berkeley, CA, 1998.

REMARKS BY RICHARD GERE AND DIANE DI PRIMA

"Jean-Claude van Itallie, one of our most original playwrights and a longtime practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, has taken Guru Padmasambhavas 8th century masterpiece, The Great Liberation Through Hearing in the Bardo, or as its known in the west, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, and rendered its essential brilliance into deeply moving and inspiring poems meant to be read aloud. Its sole intent is to pilot us wandering voyagers through the illusory and superstitious realms we call life and death.

With constant reminders to pay attention and watch our minds, the poet urges us to come to our senses and remember our Nobly Born true selves completely beyond all designation, all hope and all tears?merging with the clear light bliss, no left, no circumference, an ocean with no boat?I love this little book. Read it aloud!"

Richard Gere

"Jean-Claude van Itallies presentation of this old classic brings us face to face with the radiance and emptiness of our own minds. He has made new a relevant ?even urgent ?text: A guide for the continually arising moments of choice in our living and in dying." Diane di Prima

The Tibetan Book of the Dead,' is a guide for the dead and dying. The first part, called Chikhai Bardo, describes the moment of death. The second part, Chonyid Bardo, deals with the states which supervene immediately after death. The third part, Sidpa Bardo, concerns the onset of the birth instinct and of prenatal events.

John Grisham - The Broker

Author: John Grisham - The Broker

Publisher: Doubleday

Edition: (January 11, 2005)

Hardcover: 368 pages

Before he was sent to federal prison for treason (among other things), Joel Backman was an extremely powerful man. Known as "the broker," Backman was a high roller--a lawyer making $10 million a year who could "open any door in Washington."

That is, until he tried to broker a deal selling access to the world's most powerful satellite surveillance system to the highest bidder. When caught, Backman accepted prison as the one option that would keep him safe and alive, since the interested parties (the Israelis, the Saudis, the Russians, and the Chinese) were all itching to get their hands on his secrets at any cost. Little does he know that his own government has designs on accessing that information--or at least letting it die with him. Now, six years after his incarceration, the director of the CIA convinces a lame duck president to pardon Backman, and the broker becomes a free man--and an open target.

The Broker marries the best of John Grisham's many talents--his ability to immerse himself in the culture of small town life (in this case, Bologna, Italy), and his uncanny mastery of the chase. The first half of the book focuses on Backman's transformation from infamous power broker to helpless victim in his own game. Upon his release from prison, Backman is taken into "protective custody" and whisked off to Italy where he is assigned a new identity, and a tutor to help him blend in. Sure he is on the run, but some readers may feel that Backman's time spent in Bologna is a bit too leisurely--readers join him on an almost cinematic tour through the Italian town, complete with language and history lessons. Impatient readers will be happy to know that the final half of the novel is classic Grisham--a fast-paced, thrilling cat and mouse chase pitting Backman against the numerous agencies that want him dead--as the broker makes a move to take back his life. --Daphne Durham

A History of Rome by Cyril Robinson Vol.I and II

Contents of Volume I:

A HISTORY OF ROME is the story of a tiny market town on the Tiber, its rise to world domination, and then its slow, terrible plunge to utter ruin. It is the single greatest event in all human history. Discover the fascinating origin of Rome and its Etruscan connections, its first faltering steps toward republican government, and its methodical subjugation of surrounding tribes. Gradually, Rome asserts control over all of Italy, then comes into conflict with Carthage and Hannibal. The Republic is next drawn into the intrigues of the eastern Mediterranean, finally conquering the Greek speaking world...and succumbing to Hellenic culture. Follow the rise of Marius, Sulla, Pompey and the greatest Roman of them all ?Julius Caesar.

Contents of Volume II:

A HISTORY OF ROME continues with the assassination of Julius Caesar. Augustus comes to power and puts into place the most extraordinary experiment in imperial government ever attempted, and in the process paves the way for a long period of peace, the likes of which has never since been seen. The Empire is ruled by one dynasty after another until it reaches its apogee during the age of the Antonine emperors. But chaos follows, and only the strong leadership of Diocletion brings stability. Constantines leadership promotes the new faith of Christianity, but the downward spiral of decay cannot be reversed. Economic disruptions and barbarian invasions prove too much for Rome, and the western half of the empire disintegrates into a brutal dark age.

When she arrives, however, she finds that nothing is as she expected: her former lab seems neither as organized nor as well run as it once was; the inept current chief is driven by an agenda he will not reveal; her former assistant chief has developed personal problems he won't discuss; and a glamourous FBI agent whom Marino instantly dislikes begins meddling in the case.

Therapy by Jonathan Kellerman (2004)

(Book 18 in the Alex Delaware series)

To help solve a young couple's murder, Alex Delaware needs to dig secrets out of a testy celebrity psychologist.

Jonathan Kellerman's newest Alex Delaware novel doesn't disappoint. John Rubenstein, who has read many of the Delaware stories, eases the listener back into the world of murder and suspense through his character differentiation. Experienced Kellerman listeners will easily recognize the main characters and appreciate the consistency and depth of Rubenstein's delivery. As usual, things are not as they first appear as Delaware and Milo Sturgis team up again to solve the murder of a young couple. Characters abound in this story, but, through the combined expertise of Kellerman and Rubenstein, keeping them straight is not difficult.

Homer's Epic - Unabridged

George Guidall - Narrator

Robert Fitzgerald - Translator

One of the great classics of world literature. This is a 14 CD set that runs over 16 hours. MP3's encoded @ 96kbps

The combination of Homer, Fitzgerald, and Guidall is a match made in, well, in Olympia, "where Zeus views the whole wide world." The humanity and heroism of Homer's mortals as the war between beached Hellenic warships and the wall of Troy is sumptuously spelled out. Achilles' rage, Hector's nobility, Priam's dignity, the voluble humor of the two Ajaxes are qualities one feels in the bones.

Remembering Jim Crow: African Americans Tell About Life in the Segregated South

This is a fascinating and chilling history lesson that I hope everyone will download (and please post on other boards too - this needs to be heard). It's a 2 CD audio documentary of the Jim Crow era (American Apartheid).

Remembering Jim Crow is an extraordinary opportunity to hear the voices of men and women from all walks of life who tell, in vivid and compelling stories, how their most ordinary activities were subjected to profound racial oppression; in the workplace, on street corners, and above all in the public facilities and institutions that systematically demeaned, disenfranchised, and disempowered black people. At the same time, Remembering Jim Crow is a testament to how black Southerners fought back against the system; raising children, building churches and schools, running businesses, and struggling for respect in a society that denied them the most basic rights. The result is a powerful story of survival enriched by vivid memories of individual, family, and community triumphs and tragedies.

For much of the 20th Century, African Americans in the South were barred from the voting booth, sent to the back of the bus, and walled off from many of the rights they deserved as American citizens. Until well into the 1960s, segregation was legal. The system was called Jim Crow. In this documentary, Americans-black and white-remember life in the Jim Crow times.

Jim Crow ruled the South from about 1890 to well into the 1960s. Four generations of African Americas endured this system of segregation. Present day race relations in the United States continue to be affected by this history. The Jim Crow system emerged towards the end of the historical period called Reconstruction, during which Congress had enacted laws designed to order relations between Southern whites and newly freed blacks, and to bring the secessionist states back into the Union. Southern whites felt profoundly threatened by increasing claims by African Americans for social equality and economic opportunity. In reaction, white-controlled state legislatures passed laws designed to rob blacks of their civil rights and prevent blacks from mingling with their "betters" in public places.
