The Guardian Weekly 4 June 2010

Details: About the Guardian Weekly The Guardian Weekly is one of the world's best-selling international weekly newspapers. It offers a unique blend of international news, politics, culture and comment, drawing on the considerable editorial resources of the Guardian, with selected features from the Observer, the Washington Post and Le Monde. Inside the Paper: June 4 edition Abby Deveney outlines what's in this week's issue, from an update on Rwanda sixteen years after the genocide, to the ongoing drama in Gaza, African literature and the power of waves. Kigali in Rwanda is having an ?extreme makeover? to become a business and tourist destination. Photograph: Monica Larsen Sixteen years after the genocide, things in Rwanda are looking up. Guardian health editor Sarah Boseley's special report on the state of play in the east African nation paints a picture of a country balancing growth and stability with the need for a home-grown form of democracy. Boseley provides insights into a nation that's peaceful, orderly and a darling of donor nations, though still too-often associated with angst. Her report appears as our front-page piece and a full-page of coverage inside. As we were putting the news pages together, a drama was unfolding in the seas near Israel. The military stormed a convoy of ships bringing aid supplies to Gaza. At least nine pro-Palestinian activists were killed. We bring this story to you on two news pages, including analysis by Ian Black and a Q&A backgrounder on the Gaza blockade. That substantial news package is accompanied by a comment piece and an editorial leader ? a comprehensive package, quickly crafted on a fast-moving event. This is a story that we will no doubt return to in the Weekly's coming issues. Several stories could have appeared on our front page this week. Beyond Rwanda and Gaza, the heartache of oil pumping into the Gulf of Mexico continued. Efforts to stem the flow failed, and BP admitted that it could take months to set things left. Barack Obama vented his frustration last weekend, calling the spill enraging and heartbreaking. Who could possibly argue? Our World Diary comes from sister paper the Washington Post and profiles Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi, the confident, charismatic son of the Libyan leader. A lively piece of reportage that I hope you'll find both enlightening and entertaining. Also on the upside, Le Monde reports that child labour has declined by half in Brazil in recent years thanks to a strident government anti-poverty programme. On our Comment pages, finance returns as a theme. Will Hutton warns that European governments have just a few months to make the euro a credible currency. Wonder how that'll impact my espresso from Italy? As World Cup frenzy mounts, David Runciman writes in our Review section that the tournament remains controlled by Europeans, and run in their interests. I hope you'll enjoy the fabulous photos that accompany this piece. Our Books pages review some recent African literature, Development looks at Bhutanese refugees who are divided over where to seek safety, and the Science spread seems more like poetry as it explores the dynamic of waves. This piece lulled me into beach mode, more than I can say for the London weather.
