Michael G. Cottam, David R. Tilley, "Introduction to Surface and Superlattice Excitations"

Cottam and Tilley pre an introduction to the properties of wave-like excitations associated with surfaces and interfaces. The emphasis is on acoustic, optic and magnetic excitations, and, apart from one section on liquid surfaces, the text concentrates on solids. The important topic of superlattices is also discussed, in which the different kinds of excitation are considered from a unified point of view. Throughout the book the authors are careful to relate theory and experiment and all of the most important experimental techniques are described. The theoretical treatment assumes only a knowledge of undergraduate physics, except for Green function methods that are used in a few sections; these methods are developed in an appendix. The book also contains extensive references to enable the reader to consult the research and review literature, and problems are pred in each of the main chapters to allow the reader to develop topics presented in the text.

Summary: Great book on bulk and surface plasmons polaritons

Rating: 5

For those like me who are interested in the growing field of plasmonics which deals with surface plasmons polaritons (SPP), this book is the best scholarly work I have read on the subject. Many published papers cite the book of H. Raether [...] which seems to be the chosen default textbook (originally cited in the Nature paper of Ebbesen et al). While Raether's book pres a good overview of the various techniques for measuring plasmonics effects, it lacks the breadth and mathematical rigor of Cottam's book. I have found that a much better understanding on the topic is gained by reading the mathematical and physical foundations underlying the SPP wave described in this book instead of the mostly phenomenological approach of Raether.
